These apps are designed to be in compliance with prison regulations and allow family members and friends to send messages, pictures and video calls, eCards and money to their trust account in prison. There are also federal inmate applications that provide additional services like video visits and phone calls.
JPay for instance, allows family and friends to transfer money directly into an inmate's trust account, as well as videos, emails, photos, and eCards. They can also create personal postcards using photos of their own. And it provides a safer and more secure alternative to traditional mail.
Another popular messaging app for inmates is GettingOut. It allows "simple reliable and safe communication" between inmates with their loved ones. The app is available at selected correctional facilities that allow inmates to upload photos and send messages to family members and friends on their tablets. Inmates pay $0.25 per message and their loved ones pay the cost of data to access them text inmate (but they are not explicit images). You can also use the GettingOut app to share photos on Facebook or Foursquare and check-in on Foursquare and include a video in a YouTube upload.
